Science & Innovation"Bristol has been responsible for some of the most innovative aircraft and engines ever produced." Martin Fausset, Managing Director Rolls-Royce. As a city, Bristol can lay claim to a long tradition of scientific discovery, innovation and creativity, stretching from Brunel to Concorde and the A380 to the BBC and Aardman Animations. In 2005, the Chancellor of the Exchequer conferred the title of Science City on Bristol, one of only six cities in England to receive this accolade. Science City Bristol short films The Science City designation recognised the Bristol City Region's world-class academic research at the four Universities of Bristol, Bath, West of England and Bath Spa as well as its strong scientific SME-base and potential to drive economic development through science and innovation. The Bristol City Region is also home to the UK's 3rd most powerful academic research cluster and the largest aerospace and silicon design industries in Europe.

Major companies including Airbus and Rolls Royce, which have a strategic presence in the area, together with a significant cluster of advanced engineering companies and suppliers make this sector one of the largest employers and contributors to the sub-region's economic performance. The city is home to leading digital companies both large and small, which are also global players, including Aardman Animations, the BBC, BT, Hewlett Packard Labs, Nokia Siemens Network and Orange, and a multitude of creative small and medium enterprises that are at the cutting edge of digital innovation. Bristol is ranked as a leading UK city in the European Innovation Index.
