Information Communications Technology
"Bristol has a heritage of innovation and creativity." David Macdonald, Communications Manager, Orange.
The North Bristol area has also attracted a large concentration of high technology companies in ICT sectors: software, semiconductor design, wireless.
Some of this ICT expansion can be linked to university research competences in aerospace and defence technology and expertise around Filton but much has also been attracted by the commercial opportunities presented by the availability of good quality business parks space enjoying an excellent strategic situation at the intersection of the M4 and M5 motorways, and the attractiveness of living environments accessible from this location (including Bristol, Bath and the Cotswolds) to highly skilled staff.
World-class ICT companies attracted to Bristol include BT, Hewlett Packard, Nokia Siemens Network, Orange and Toshiba. Hewlett Packard has one of its largest global R&D sites in Stoke Gifford and Orange has its headquarters at Bradley Stoke.
Orange opened a new “technocentre” in Bristol at the start of 2009. This is undertaking research and development into a new wave of broadband and mobile services as well as carrying out market research and product development.
