Siemens Energy has acquired a minority stake in Bristol-based Marine Current Turbines, a pioneer in the design and development of tidal current energy turbines and developers of SeaGen - the world’s only commercially operational tidal turbine.
Local Carbon South West gets the green light

A new body aimed at promoting the South West as a hotspot for environmental technologies and services has been formed.
Low Carbon South West (LCSW), which has been created from the merger between the Bristol Environmental Technologies & Services Initiative (BETS) and the environmental activities of the University of Bath’s Innovation Centre (BIC), will become the largest trade body of its type in the UK and will promote the thriving green industry in the region.
Bristol was the only UK city to be short-listed for the European Green Capital Award.
Bristol is one of the UK's leading environmental technology centres. The Bristol city-region hosts world-class companies in Renewable energy, waste management, recycling, energy control, sustainable transport, environmental consultancy and specialist services.
The success of Bristol's environmental technology and services sector is reflected by an employment growth rate of 32% in the Bristol area over the last ten years to approximately 6,400 people.
The sector consists of an estimated 300 companies with significant clusters located in Avonmouth/Severnside, Bristol city centre and Clifton.
The Avonmouth cluster features significant players in the renewable energy, waste management, recovery and pollution control fields, including: Ethos Energy, the Bristol Port Company, Ecotricity, Chemical Recoveries and Hambrook Pallets.
In addition, Bristol City Council is planning a wind turbine scheme at Avonmouth with capacity to supply power to 3,000 homes or half of the city's lighting.
The City Centre and Clifton hosts a mix of prominent national and international players in environmental services and consultancy fields including the Soil Association, Sustrans, Centre for Sustainable Energy, Resource Futures Ltd (incorporating the former Recycling Consortium, Network Recycling and SWAP), Schumacher UK and The Green Register (sustainable construction), as well as pioneers of sustainable technologies such as Bristol Electric Railbus, Wind Prospect, Tidal Generation (tidal stream energy) and Garrad Hassan (wind energy and marine renewables).
